How does EMDR work?
When we experience trauma, fear or oppression, the brain tends to store information under a state of duress. During the occurance of the negative event, there may not be time to make sense of an experience in a helpful amnner or to process it fully. Research has documented that reviewing a traumatic or stressful event while in a relaxed state facilitated by eye movements and other bi-lateral stimulation such as sound helps the information processing part of the brain to metabolize the experience in a healthy manner. The process of EMDR helps people to incorporate insights and feelings that are life enhacing as opposed to those that are self defeating.
